Round & About in Samoa
There are many taxis available offering their services at a good value. Please note taxi services are not metered, do ask the driver how much the journey will cost in advance and agree on a price before setting off to your destination. Exploring the islands on Samoas brightly coloured buses provides inexpensive transport for locals and an invaluable experience and memories for visitors to our islands. Bus terminals in Apia are located behind the food market in Fugalei, and opposite the flea market at Savalalo. On Savai’i, the bus terminal is situated at the market in Salelologa.
Inter-island & Chartered Ferry Services
The passenger and vehicle ferry between the main islands of Upolu and Savai'i are operated by the Samoa Shipping Corporation. The ferries depart from the Mulifanua Wharf on Upolu near the international airport. If you are travelling from Apia do allow 45 minutes for the journey. For the return journey the ferry departs from the Salelologa Wharf on Savai'i. The duration of each trip is just over an hour. We suggest to arrive early at the wharf to purchase your tickets. To get to Manono Island, boats operate from the Manono-uta at the western end of Upolu, only moments away located down the road from Mulifanua Wharf. There is no set timetable in place for boats operating to Manono Island, however arrangements can be made onsite at Manono-uta.
Driving in Samoa
Driving in Samoa is on the left-hand side. Visitors to Samoa who wish to rent a vehicle must obtain a Temporary Driver License. To qualify the applicant must hold a full driver license from their country of origin. Holders of Learners, Restricted or Provisional Driver License will not be issued a Temporary Driver License. Besides from the Land Transport Authority in Vaitele (in Apia), other agencies such as Samoa Post and several vehicle rental companies in Apia and the airport will validate your temporary license.
